Well people have mentioned both parts of it, but not together.

Giant touchscreen that controls everything + Glass roof.

Electronics, direct sunlight, and an enclosed space were heat builds up = no bueno

Manufacturers have been fitting panoramic sunroofs and infotainment systems for years, what are you frightened of in particular?

I haven’t followed this at all yet, late to the party. Is there a Head-Up Display that’s supposed to be the instrument cluster?

Bah... my ex-Corporate is selling now a built-in oven, with an LCD screen on the door and an inner cam, to check the food while it’s cooking... maybe there are now some LCD and CCD that are heat resistant. IMO the real problem with that screen is its placement, since it obliges to remove the eyes from the road in front of you to check it. It’s an accident waiting to happen.

eh tbh... the lectrics will handle the heat just fine... now the sun glare on the screen from that big ole panoramic roof might be an issue

No HUD, just the screen for everything. They’ve been pretty adamant about that.

That’s why you select components rated for automotive temperature ranges.

I’m curious as to how it does with glare.

Heat shouldn’t be an issue. You can build electronics that can survive in high heat and freezing conditions. Smartphone manufacturers don’t do it because...reasons. Glare definitely might be an issue and something Tesla might miss (like how the curvature of the Model X’s windscreen can make things a little “fucky” without tinting it).

Starting price is 35k, but any options will put it in the mid 40s. What other sedan is in that price range, is rwd also, but has a manual option? Production recently ended for it as well and it has a V8.

I’d pick the unicorn over the trendy iphone tesla.

where are the AC vents?

Does that roof have a sliding panel so you can close it when you want to?

The least they could’ve done is provide more cupholders in the space they saved!

I’m not fan of the giant iPad instead of a real interior

I think they did fix that eventually. I’m sure they won’t let it happen again on the 3.

Probably has an anti glare coating. My twingo has a central screen and I’ve never had any issues.

The anti-glare and UV coatings they have for automotive glass these days are pretty great. You can tell quite a difference sitting behind the glass of a 2000ish car and a 2015ish car. With the A/C taking such a big electric load, I’m sure Tesla has some pretty quality coating bouncing heat off the car.
More often than not, if you think about something being a problem, chances are pretty good that the company knows about it and at least one engineer is sick of going to DFMEA meetings about it.

Sunroofs are much smaller and can be covered completely. Also this is larger and sticking out of the dash, meaning it’ll be absorbed more sunlight from more directions (like the front, that normal cars aren’t faced with.)

1) Yes

2) No that I’m aware of (Probably not)

3) Yep

4) Literally everything’s controlled by it. So you’re SOL if it craps out.

A significant number of cars with panoramic sunroofs dont have anything to cover them (source, owned such a car). Maybe it could be an issue but I doubt it, the Model S screen is prominent and I havent heard any complaints, same with the Mercedes and Mazda tablet style screens.

I still have concerns. From other pictures it looks like the roof is tinted a little, but as long as light is still getting through, so is heat. And since they supposedly left out an instrument cluster for cost savings, I have reservations about the quality/durability of the screen.

I’m sure they’ve done enough to make in durable for a little while. I’m just concerned whole it’ll hold up in 5-10 years.

Those are mighty fine concerns too. I know with smarts, they too have clear roofs and their interiors regularly soar over 180 degrees in the summer. Yet, the touchscreen units from the factory shrug it off like it’s no big deal. Then again, smart has the engineering of a company that’s been around the block for over a century.

Funny enough, the only part of a smart’s interior that’s known to fail due to heat is the soldering in the dash clock “pod”. Over time, apparently the soldering will fail due to repeated heating and cooling.

Tesla is part tech company, part auto manufacturer. If they decided to stick what’s functionally just an iPad to the dash, that’s bad. Consumer-grade tablets cannot deal with heat and will not last 5-10 years in a car like this. If they were intelligent, the hardware will last. Hopefully when they slashed the price they didn’t slash it on the display that basically is the nerve center of the car.

If heat is an issue, then the sunroof won’t make a difference.

Source: I’ve temporarily killed iphones by leaving them completely out of the sun in my glove box during Phoenix summers. Once they cool off they come back to life.

The vents are in the dark strip that runs across the dash. The direction of airflow is controlled electronically.

Another potentially HUGE issue is polarized sunglasses. I don’t have problem in either of my cars, but they don’t use Smartphones for the screens. But I can’t see my smartphone accept looking straight on. I guess it’s a good thing I don’t have to look at it at an angle to SEE MY SPEED!
